Support Farmworker Rights, Send an E-Fax
The Farm Labor Organizing Committee, AFL-CIO (FLOC), which represents tobacco farmworkers, has for more than two years called on Reynolds American, the second largest producer of cigarettes in the US, to improve the conditions of tobacco harvesters in the fields of the South. Each year tens of thousands of the tobacco farmworkers suffer from sub-minimum wages, corrupt crew leaders, unacceptable conditions in labor camps, and serious daily health risks, including heat stroke and death. To date, Reynolds CEO Susay Ivey has refused to meet with FLOC to discuss these disgraceful conditions.
Recently, FLOC approached Reynolds Board member Betsy Atkins to ask for her help in starting a dialogue between FLOC and Ivey. Atkins says the she has continuously encouraged Ivey to have a dialogue with FLOC about the terrible conditions under which tobacco harvesters labor, but FLOC has never received a direct response from Atkins or Ivey. As Ivey has continually ignored this moral imperative, we are asking Atkins to show her support for the farmworkers at the bottom of Reynold's supply chain and resign from the Reynolds Board.
