The North Carolina LiteracyCorps ENGAGE Project is a statewide group of AmeriCorps members working to increase literacy skills in adults, children, adolescents, and English language learners. LiteracyCorps members are placed at campus and community based literacy programs across the state to tutor and/or teach learners, recruit, train, and manage volunteer tutors, and help increase the capacity for service of the organizations they are placed with. In addition, all NC LiteracyCorps members attend quarterly training sessions where they receive training on topics such as volunteer recruitment and management, diversity, and civic engagement. The North Carolina LiteracyCorps is a program of the Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education (SCALE). SCALE is part of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The mission of SCALE is to mobilize and support college students and campus-based programs to address the literacy needs of this country. Through a dynamic partnership between campus and community, SCALE develops leaders who are agents of social change.
